As vice president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and former board member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Christopher D. Harner, MD, certainly has a wealth of leadership experience. He is a physician with UPMC Center for Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh and has a professional interest in knee, ligament and cartilage injuries.

While on the AAOS board of directors, Dr. Harner focused on maintaining high-quality patient care and made efforts to diversify the profession.

"It is important to our profession that we have a greater diversity," said Dr. Harner in a 2007 AAOS news release. "The racial and ethnic makeup of this country is changing. The face of orthopaedic surgery needs to be reflecting that change."

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Harner has conducted several studies and published them in major research journals, three of which he serves on the editorial review board. He has earned several grants and awards for his research, including the Excellence in Research Award from AOSSM and the Hughston Best Paper Award from The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Harner was recently appointed to a 10-year term on the board of directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he is currently an officer. He has been acknowledged as a master instructor by the Arthroscopy Association of North America and as a top physician in the northeaster region of the country by The Best Doctors. He has served as the president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, where he remains on the board of directors.

Dr. Harner received his medical training from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and completed a fellowship at Salt Lake City Knee and Sports Medicine.
