Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Lewis Yocum of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic

Recently hailed as the possible new "King of Sports Medicine" by Forbes Magazine, Lewis Yocum, MD, has advised and operated on several professional athletes. Dr. Yocum is a physician with the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles and has special training in performing ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, also known as Tommy John surgery, a procedure developed and pioneered by Dr. Yocum's mentor, Frank Jobe, MD.

Dr. Yocum is familiar with having his name in the press for his affiliation with professional athletes. However, this summer he reached national acclaim when he performed UCL reconstruction on Stephen Strasburg, the Washington Nationals' star pitcher. In addition to his work with Mr. Strasburg, Dr. Yocum has worked with baseball stars including Jacoby Ellsbury, Jordan Zimmerman and Ted Lilly.

Along with his colleague Neal ElAttrache, MD, Dr. Yocum was named as one of the top ten surgeons by Baseball Prospectus, which labeled him "baseball's first super-surgeon." He was recognized for his work as the medical director for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as well as his role in overseeing the expansion of Kerlan-Jobe.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Yocum is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Orthpaedic Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has authored numerous articles and books on his professional research. He previously served as the assistant medical director of the Professional Golf Association and Ladies Professional Golf Association and on the board of trustees for Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, Calif.

Dr. Yocum earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois in Chicago and completed his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. He also completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Inglewood, Calif.
