H. Brent Bamberger, DO, a hand surgeon with Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio, was recently named president of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. He has published several articles on elbow reconstruction and holds surgical instruments patents.

Among his innovations, Dr. Bamberger created an arthroscopic implant for the basilar joint of the hand that includes a distal surface and an opposite proximal surface, according to a Fresh Patents report. The distal surface is positioned adjacent to the first metacarpal bone at the basilar joint of the hand. The implant also includes a shield extending outwardly from the distal surface of the body to shield the first and second metacarpal bone. He also created an arthrodesis implant for finger joints, according to the report.

Dr. Bamberger is the director of the Hand Center of Southwestern Ohio, based at Southview Hospital in Centerville, Ohio, and the residency medical director at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He has a professional interest in progressive surgical techniques and is a founding member of Athletic Workshop, a group promoting better training for athletes.

"At the Hand Center we can fix it and we have the properly trained staff in therapy to get people back to pre-injury status," Dr. Bamberger said on his website.

He has also done research on traumatic injury, such as injuries incurred from snow blowers and treadmills, and gives advice about how to avoid these injuries. He is a clinical associate professor at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine at Grandview Hospital and Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton. In addition to his practice, Dr. Bamberger has made several surgical humanitarian trips to Guatemala to help people in need.

Dr. Bamberger earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and his master's degree in physical therapy from Columbia University. He completed a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of South Florida. Dr. Bamberger has been the recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Ohio Occupational Therapist Association.
