Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. John R. Tongue of Tualatin, Oregon

John R. Tongue, MD, a private-practice orthopedic surgeon in Tualatin, Ore., has been a leader in orthopedic surgery for many years and currently serves as the second vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a professional interest in arthroscopic surgery, joint replacement and sports medicine.

"Healthcare is rapidly changing, which means the needs of our members will change," said Dr. Tongue in an AAOS release. "I look forward to helping the Academy move forward with programs, benefits and services that will help us all provide better care for our patients."

Dr. Tongue has received many honors, including the AAOS Humanitarian Award and the Oregon Medical Association's Doctor-Citizen of the Year award. He has served as president for several state and regional orthopedic associations. He has authored several publications and given many presentations on his research.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Tongue is also active within his community. He was the chief petitioner for the Oregon Safety Belt Initiative and received the National Highway Traffic Safety Association Public Service Award for his work.

Dr. Tongue earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Training Program. He also completed a fellowship in hand surgery at the University of California in San Francisco.
