Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Leo Whiteside of the Missouri Bone & Joint Center

Leo Whiteside, MD, founder and president of the board of directors at the Missouri Bone & Joint Center in St. Louis, is a leader in hip and knee surgery. He invented three total knee prostheses, two unicompartmental knee prostheses, three total hip prostheses and other surgical instruments.

"We continue to develop and refine techniques at the Missouri Bone and Joint Center that ultimately benefit total joint replacement around the world," said Dr. Whiteside on his practice website. He is the director of the Missouri Bone & Joint Research Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on making advances in biotechnology and arthritis treatment.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Whiteside has served as associate editor and consultant reviewer of several orthopedic manuscripts and Clinical Orthopaedics & Related Research, The Journal of Arthroplasty and The Journal of Knee Surgery. He has several publications to his name, including a book on ligament balancing in total knee arthroplasty.

Dr. Whiteside is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons and the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery. He is a past president of The Hip Society and past board member of AAOS and The Knee Society.

Beyond his orthopedic practice, Dr. Whiteside is involved in rebuilding a wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica, where his goal is to engage Costa Ricans in preserving the national habitat. His plans also including holding education programs about the rainforest for foreign visitors at a conference center he constructed.

Dr. Whiteside earned his medical degree from the University of Texas in Austin and completed additional orthopedic training at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis.
