Erik N. Zeegen, MD, associate medical director of the Valley Hip & Knee Institute in Tarzana, Calif., learned the important role surgeons play in their patients' lives while accompanying his father, an ophthalmologist, during his Saturday morning rounds.

"I was impressed from an early age how much of an impact surgery can have on a patient's life," said Dr. Zeegan, while recounting those rounds on his website. In addition to spending time with his father, he also watched an orthopedic surgeon in the operating room. "Watching him put back together a broken bone with plates and screws, or replace someone's hip was truly amazing to me and I knew that was what I wanted to do."

In the years since his first exposure to surgery, Dr. Zeegen has become one of the leading knee and hip surgeons in the country. He uses minimally invasive techniques to perform anterior hip replacement and unicompartmental knee replacement. He specializes in limb sparing surgery for benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors of the extremities and pelvis.

In addition to performing surgery, Dr. Zeegen holds free monthly evening seminars for patients and their families to explain what they should expect during surgery and recovery. He has authored many book chapters and given presentations on knee and hip surgery. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.

Dr. Zeegen earned his medical degree from the University of California Los Angeles, where he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. He also completed a fellowship in orthopedic surgical oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
