Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Bernard Rawlins of the Hospital for Special Surgery

Bernard Rawlins, MD, of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, is experienced in treating all spinal disorders from the cervical spine to scoliosis in adult and pediatric patients. His expertise in treating so many different conditions is supplemented by his research interests, including spine biomechanics, gene-mediated spine fusion and innovative surgical techniques.

Dr. Rawlins focuses on surgical solutions for spinal conditions and has several areas of expertise, including scoliosis treatment, minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, athletic spine injuries and spinal stenosis. He has published and lectured publicly on these topics and regularly volunteers his time to teach and educate on spine surgery in West Africa.

He has earned the Nancy Kane Bischoff Mentor Award from the Hospital for Special Surgery and several awards from the Scoliosis Research Society for his papers. He has contributed to advances with surgical implants and techniques and holds several patents used in complex spine surgery. Dr. Rawlins' current research includes osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rawlins is a spine consultant for the New York Knicks and the New York Mets. He also serves as a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He is affiliated with the Cervical Spine Research Society, Scoliosis Research Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Rawlins earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He also completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the Minnesota Spine Center in Minneapolis.
