Richard Hawkins, MD, co-founded the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., and founder of the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, has positioned himself as a leader in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He has treated professional athletes from around the world, and this past year he took the time to visit Haiti and treat earthquake victims, according to a clinic report.

Dr. Hawkins traveled the country with a team from Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and wrote a report for the American Red Cross discussing treatment options. One possibility he looked into was gathering physicians from several offices to take rotations in Haiti with their staff.

"In order for Haiti to move forward, they're depending on us," said Dr. Hawkins in the report. In Haiti, he sometimes worked in operating rooms without electricity or running water and had to treat broken joints externally because the operating rooms were not sterile.

Dr. Hawkins is a founding member and past president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and past president of the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine. He serves on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons council on education and is the chairman of the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas

He has served as the director of the sports medicine council for Canada and is a former team physician for the Canadian Olympic Team. He is currently a team physician for the Colorado Rockies and served as team physician for the 1998 and 1999 Super Bowl Championship Denver Broncos teams.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hawkins has published more than 200 articles and videos and presented at 500 national and international meetings. He is a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Hawkins earned his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and completed a fellowship in knee, shoulder and spine surgery.
