Lawrence D. Lemak, MD, of Lemak Sports Medicine, has been a leader in sports medicine through his work to promote sports safety for both professional and youth athletes. He has been a major advocate for standardizing treatment for professional and college athletes and has educated many coaches about sports medicine injuries.

One of Dr. Lemak's newer ventures, The SMART (Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma) Institute, is a collaboration with other physicians and specialists providing preventative education and treatment for athletes and coaches. One of the components includes instruction on developing an emergency action plan for coaches.

"This educational component includes seminars for coaches on catastrophic injuries of the spine, brain and heat-related illnesses," Dr. Lemak said in a Birmingham magazine report. "Coaches must have a plan of what to do if the catastrophe happens on the playing field because it does happen."

Other components of the program include injury surveillance, women's injury prevention and a grass roots community prevention plan.

Dr. Lemak is a leader in arthroscopy and has written many articles on the subject. He is a faculty member of the minimally invasive surgery and computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery symposium. During his career, Dr. Lemak founded the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala., where he currently serves as a board member. He was also founding partner of the former Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham.

Dr. Lemak has professional affiliations with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He currently serves as team physician for several area high schools, Alabama State University and the University of South Florida.

Dr. Lemak earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh.
