Thomas P. Sculco, MD, became the surgeon-in-chief of a top hospital orthopedic program when the U.S. News & World Report ranked the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York City as number one in orthopedics this past July. Dr. Sculco is also chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery and professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

Among his subspecialties, Dr. Sculco includes treatment for the hip and knee as well as surgical solutions for arthritis. He has an expertise in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement as well as implant wear and osteolysis and thromboembolic disease.

"Most surgeons are now performing hip-replacement surgery through smaller incisions and less aggressive and traumatic approaches," wrote Dr. Sculco in a commentary for the The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. However, in order to avoid complications, he says "these approaches should be reserved only for the most experienced hip surgeons with an interest in this area."

In addition to his practice, Dr. Sculco has written more than 235 academic papers and research presentations. His current research includes implant design in total hip and knee replacement, blood management and failure mechanisms in joint replacement.

Dr. Sculco was recognized twice as one of the "Best Doctors in New York," by New York Magazine. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arthritis Foundation and two research awards from The Hip Society. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a founding member of the Knee Society and has served on the board of directors for the Hip Society.

Dr. Sculco earned his medical degree from Columbia University in New York City and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
