Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Kenneth Light of San Francisco Spine Center

Founder of San Francisco Spine Center Kenneth Light, MD, recently became one of the only physicians in the United States to successfully reverse a spinal fusion. Spinal fusions were thought to be permanent procedures, until recently, and many fusions severely limit the patient's range of motion. This was the case for Dr. Light's patient, who also suffered from constant pain before the reversal.

In order to complete the reversal, Dr. Light implanted an artificial disc. There is a chance of paralysis if the implant fails; however, this has not been the case for Dr. Light's patient.

"We put the implant in. [The patient] woke up. She was fine," Dr. Light said in an article from Chicago WLS-TV ABC News. "She felt fine enough to go home the next day."

Even before performing this procedure, Dr. Light was called upon to share his expertise about neck and spine care for several publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle, Glamour and the Marin Independent Journal. He has given several presentations regarding orthopedic surgery and spine surgery techniques across the country.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Light has been the director of spine surgery at San Francisco General Hospital and co-medical director at the San Francisco Spine Center at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. He is a member of The Leroy Abbott Society, Simmons Surgical Society and a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Light earned his medical degree at Cornell University College of Medicine in Ithaca, N.Y., and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at several hospitals in California. He also completed a spine surgery fellowship with Edward H. Simmons, MD, at State University of New York at Buffalo.
