After a long career in orthopedic surgery, which includes co-founding the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, pioneering the Tommy John surgery for major league pitchers with damaged UCLs and training several sports medicine physicians, Frank W. Jobe, MD, is one of the most recognizable names in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.

Dr. Jobe is often sought after for his expertise in shoulder and elbow surgery, specifically for his knowledge about pitching. In an ESPN article, Dr. Jobe talked about common treatments for pitchers when overuse injuries occur.

"When a pitcher comes in with elbow problems, you often see that their ligaments were already wearing out well before," said Dr. Jobe in the article. "What the [Tommy John] surgery does is restore the ligament's stability to where it was four or five years ago."

He says that the next big break through in treatment for pitching injuries could be stem cell technology and joint cartilage regrowth.

During his career, Dr. Jobe has served on the president's council on physical fitness and sports. He is an orthopedic consultant for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the PGA Tour. He has authored seven books and over 140 medical publications. He has also been the medical director of the biomechanics laboratory at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Ingelwood, Calif., and clinical professor at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

In addition to several other recognitions, Dr. Jobe has received the Charles S. Neer award twice for his work in UCL reconstruction and throwing shoulder instability. Dr. Jobe earned his medical degree from Loma Linda (Calif.) University and completed his residency and internship in orthopedic surgery at Los Angeles County Hospital.
