After performing over 200 minimally invasive spinal fusion procedures in the past few years, Gary Alegre, MD, of Alpine Orthopaedic Group in St. Stockton, Calif., instructs experienced physicians around the world on minimally invasive spinal fusion techniques. Most recently, two physicians from Australia traveled to view and learn from Dr. Alegre.

"He's got the knowledge and tricks of the trade. A video doesn't tell you all the pitfalls and pearls. He understands the risks and avoidance techniques in this procedure," said Andrew Kam, MD, a neurosurgeon from Syndey, Australia, in an article from The Record.

Many patients can return home the day after the procedure, Dr. Alegre said, which is quicker than patients receiving traditional spine surgery. Patients are also usually able to return to normal activities quicker, in six weeks. One of the many procedures Dr. Alegre has performed throughout his career was a spinal fusion on Carl Eck, a patient who had previously received four failed surgeries for a fractured vertebra.

"When I woke up a half-hour later, I could immediately feel a difference. I literally felt something had worked," said Mr. Eck in the article. "I definitely never felt that good after those earlier surgeries. They were pretty invasive; they cut muscle."

In addition to providing his surgical services, Dr. Alegre is a team physician at University of the Pacific in California and the Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland A's. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Paul R. Lipscomb Orthopedic Society. Dr. Alegre earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California in Sacramento. His additional training includes a spine surgery fellowship with three hospitals in Louisville, Ky.
