The field of pediatric scoliosis and spinal disorders has been rapidly expanding with the development of new body braces, the scolioscore scoliosis detection test and legislation in several states calling for schoolchildren to receive scoliosis screening. As an expert in the field, Sigurd H. Berven, MD, recently shared his expertise on the subject with the New York Times.

Dr. Berven is a physician with the University of California in San Francisco and has a clinical interest in degenerative conditions of the spine, spinal tumors and spine trauma in patients of all ages. He remains at the cutting-edge of spine surgery through his research on cellular and molecular techniques for the biological regeneration of spine components, including the intervertebral disc.

In the New York Times article, Dr. Berven said if physicians can detect early cases of scoliosis and refer them to treatment, the impact of the disorder can decrease as the patient grows into adulthood. He recommends testing in elementary school aged children or before.

"The impact of the deformity on adults — pain and functional disability — can be quite severe," said Dr. Berven in the article. If the disorder goes undetected, the patient could develop spinal stenosis. For patients already facing spine disorders, Dr. Berven recommended new minimally invasive techniques, which do not require spinal fusion.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Berven speaks to audiences around the world on topics such as evaluation and management of spinal disorders. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, where he also completed his combined orthopedic residency. Dr. Berven's additional training includes clinical training in spine surgery at the University of California in San Francisco and chief resident in pediatric orthopedic surgery at Boston Children's Hospital.
