Smith+Nephew announces strong performance results for joint replacement technology

Global medical technology company Smith+Nephew's OXINIUM technology has shown strong performance measures in hip and knee arthroplasties.

OXINIUM is made with zirconium alloy that transforms into ceramicised metal through oxidation for enhanced performance, according to an Aug. 30 news release.

Using four national and regional joint registries with more than 2 million procedures over the past 20 years, the company found that its joint replacement technology showed the lowest risk of revision at 10 years for hip arthroplasties and high survivorship in total knee arthroplasty.

Smooth+Nephew also reported that its OXINIUM technology is associated with increased savings and lower readmission rates.
