Medtronic, Stryker and Zimmer Biomet are all leaders in the medical device space for spine and orthopedics.

Here's where the three stack up across seven areas:

1. Finances

Medtronic: $8.2 billion revenue in Q4 2021

Stryker: $4 billion net sales in Q1 2021

Zimmer Biomet: $1.8 billion net sales in Q1 2021

2. Number of employees

Medtronic: 90,000+

Stryker: about 40,000 in 2019

Zimmer Biomet: 20,000

3. Leaders

Medtronic: Geoffrey Martha became CEO in April 2020 and has been with Medtronic since 2011. He previously worked executive leadership roles in the company including chief integration officer, executive vice president of the restorative therapies group and senior vice president of strategy and business development.

Stryker: Kevin Lobo joined Stryker in 2011 and was the company's group president of orthopedics. He became CEO in October 2012 and became board chair in July 2014.

Zimmer Biomet: Bryan Hanson became president, CEO and a member of the board of directors in December 2017. He previously worked as a member of Medtronic's executive committee.

7. Notable news so far in 2021

Medtronic: This year, Medtronic said it would double down on data, artificial intelligence and machine learning. It continues to push into the spine space getting clearance for its neurostimulator and UNiD Rods.

Stryker: After it's key acquisition of Wright Medical in November, Stryker unveiled its new foot and ankle portfolio in May.

Zimmer Biomet: In February, Zimmer Biomet announced plans to spin off its spine and dental business into a new entity, NewCo, and former Medtronic exec Vafa Jamali was tapped to lead it. In April, Zimmer Biomet received FDA clearance for its Rosa partial knee system.
