Medical device company DJO has been keen on the orthopedic space, paying close attention to the foot and ankle markets. In the last six months, the company has made three key acquisitions in orthopedics.

In November, the company acquired Stryker's STAR line of total ankle implants and Tactys finger replacement implants. In a news release, DJO CEO Brady Shirley discussed the company's eye on growing that area.

"Ankle and finger arthroplasty are two fast-growing arthroplasty segments, and this acquisition reflects DJO's focus on providing market-leading solutions to meet the greater needs of surgeons and their patients," he said.

About two months later, DJO announced its acquisition of Trilliant Surgical. That deal included Trilliant's novel Arsenal foot plating system. Mr. Shirley recognized Trilliant's implants as a complement to Stryker's STAR system.

In its second acquisition of 2021, DJO acquired MedShape. MedShape, founded in 2005, is known for its patented superelastic nickel titanium shape memory alloy and shape memory polymer technologies. The acquisition adds MedShape's portfolio of devices for fracture fixation, joint fusion and soft tissue injury repair.

"We believe our acquisitions of STAR, Trilliant Surgical, and now MedShape, have created a strong position in the space and will create a rapid growth platform," Mr. Shirley said.
