Wayne, Pa.-based DuraStat was awarded "Best New Technology in Spine" by Orthopedics This Week, according to a Nov. 19 press release.

DuraStat's technology addresses limitations to dural repair techniques, the release said. Its device has a curved blunt tip with a recessed needle and suture to let surgeons find the ideal position for their repair, as well as an automated mechanism for single-handed needle passage.

The device has been used at dozens of U.S. spine facilities, with Alex Vaccaro, MD, PhD, at Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute as an early adopter, the release said.

"We thank Orthopedics This Week, and the independent panel of clinician evaluators for their recognition of DuraStat and its ability to contribute both to better outcomes for patients, and substantial cost savings for hospitals and ASCs," DuraStat Chair Alex Lukianov said in the release. "As a patient who experienced a persistent CSF leak following an incidental durotomy, I have a unique understanding of the acute importance of making DuraStat widely available so that other patients can avoid the saga of recovery that I've experienced."
