The past quarter has been varied for orthopedic and spine companies, with some reporting spine sales down slightly while others had significant growth.

Here is a short update on spine sales for six companies:

1. Johnson & Johnson reported spine sales dropped 2 percent worldwide last year, hitting $3.2 billion. Spine sales in the fourth quarter were down 1.8 percent, driven by international declines, and U.S. spine sales were also down 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter.

2. Stryker reported neurotechnology and spine sales at $3.1 billion, a 19.2 percent increase for the full year of 2019. For the fourth quarter, the company reported $290 million in spine sales, an 18.6 percent increase.

3. Medtronic reported second quarter spine revenue at $692 million, a 5.5 percent year-over-year increase. When combined with the sales from the enabling technologies used in spine, including robotics, navigation, imaging and powered surgical instruments, the spine revenue and U.S. spine revenue grew in the high single digits.

4. NuVasive's preliminary full year 2019 revenue hit $1.17 billion, a 6 percent increase over 2018. International revenue for the year was up 10 percent and U.S. spinal hardware jumped 7 percent for the year.

5. Zimmer Biomet spine and craniomaxillofacial sales were down 2.2 percent to $747 million for the year. However, the company aims to continue focusing on the line.

6. Alphatec reported a 30 percent increase in revenue for 2019, hitting $113.1 million to $113.5 million based on preliminary results. The company expects 2020 revenue to jump to $130 million to $134 million, a 19 percent to 21 percent growth as it plans eight to 10 new product launches in the coming months.
