Orthofix signed an asset purchase agreement with German company Wittenstein SE Feb. 4 to acquire its Fitbone platform.

Four insights:

1. The Fitbone intramedullary lengthening system is designed for limb lengthening of the femur and tibia bones.

2. Fitbone features a lengthening nail that is implanted in the bone. More than 3,500 cases have been performed with the system in over 15 countries.

3. Wittenstein SE is developing a similar technology, Fitspine, for early onset scoliosis, which will be included in the acquisition.

4. The transaction includes $18 million in cash closing considerations and a manufacturing supply contract with Wittenstein SE.
