Neuromodulation implant for spinal cord stimulation on the rise as search for opioid alternatives intensifies

As physicians look for alternate ways to treat pain in the midst of the opioid crisis, neuromodulation implants for spinal cord stimulation is experiencing a significant surge, reports Business Insider.

Four things to know:

1. Neuromodulation is an implant that sends small bursts of electricity into the nervous system to treat pain.

2. Spinal cord stimulation is one of the primary forms of neuromodulation.

3. Roughly 110,000 implants for SCS were sold last year, an increase of 20,000 from 2017, according to a Medtech 360 report. The report anticipates that 230,000 implants will be sold in 2027.

4. The SCS implant is most effective in patients who encounter complications after spine surgery or complex regional pain syndrome.
