Baylah Mazonson of Canton (Mass.) High School won the $5,000 scholarship, which is awarded to students whose achievements and interest in a career in medicine, biomedical engineering or life sciences establish them as a potential future leader in their field.

Ms. Mazonson excelled in academics and her essay in response to the question, "How do you see yourself contributing to the future of the life sciences?"

She detailed how two of her family members were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and her determination to pursue a career in clinical medicine with the hopes of helping patients with chronic conditions.

Ms. Mazonson will attend Boston University in the fall to study biology.
