A federal jury convicted four physicians and three others in a $40 million bribery and kickback scheme related to a physician-owned hospital in Texas; now, the Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Pfeifle requested the physicians be taken into custody, according to a Dallas News report.

Three things to know:

1. Ms. Pfeifle requested the physicians be detained because many face other criminal charges; she contends they are flight risks. The other criminal allegations haven't been publicly reported.

2. In her motion for detention, Ms. Pfiefle said the physicians have "significant financial resources" and connections in other countries. She also noted some have liquidated assets.

3. The physicians were convicted of accepting financial remuneration for performing surgeries at the now closed Forest Park Medical Center in Dallas. Ms. Pfeifle requested the judge immediately detain the defendants after the conviction, but the judge declined.
