Vertebral Technologies’ modular implant system reduces neurologic injury from lateral spine surgery: 6 notes

Spinal Tech

Vertebral Technologies’ InterFuse lateral system reduced neurologic injury from lateral spine surgery in a clinical study conducted by Reginald Knight, MD.

Six things to know:

1. Dr. Knight is the director of the Cooperstown, N.Y.-based Bassett Spine Care Institute and vice president of medical affairs at Oneonta, N.Y.-based A.O. Fox Hospital. Between October 2013 and September 2018, Dr. Knight treated 35 patients with lumbar degenerative conditions using VTI's InterFuse lateral system.

2. The VTI InterFuse lateral system is designed to allow for a large vertebral footprint with less soft tissue distraction.

3. All of the patients, regardless of new paresthesia, reported significant improvement; there were no revision surgeries.

4. The 14 percent new-onset paresthesia rate is greater than a 50 percent improvement over other published outcomes.

5. "These clinical results of our first-generation InterFuse lateral system helps validate that nerve injury attributable to transpsoas retraction in lateral surgery can be minimized with the patented modularity the InterFuse lateral system offers," said Paul Hickey, president and CEO of VTI.

6. Dr. Knight will present the study results at the 2019 International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery conference in Anaheim, Calif., April 3-5.
