CyMedica Orthopedics' e-vive neuromuscular electrical stimulation treatment led to a clinically significant increase in quadriceps strength after total knee replacement, according to clinical trial results presented at the 2019 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, March 13-15 in Las Vegas.
The clinical trial evaluated the effectiveness of the e-vive system for total knee replacement rehabilitation compared to the standard of care at the Cleveland Clinic. The researchers observed a 12.9 percent increase in quadriceps strength at three weeks postoperatively; patients who received the standard of care lost 29 percent of their quadriceps strength in the same period.
Patients who received e-vive experienced increased Timed Up and Go test times at both six and 12 weeks postoperatively compared to the standard of care. "The results of this trial demonstrate that pre- and postsurgical muscle strengthening and neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy was shown to be a significant component for patient rehabilitation to achieve quadriceps strength and an earlier return to activity. Combined with the digital health patient engagement features of the device, patients were able to actively participate in more productive rehabilitation following total knee replacement surgery," said Carlos Higuera-Rueda, MD, Cleveland Clinic orthopedic surgeon and the study's primary investigator.
