The Ohio State medical center completes surgery with Calypso Knee System: 3 notes

Spinal Tech

Surgeons at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus performed one of the first U.S. knee replacement surgeries with the Calypso Knee System.

Here are three things to know:

1. Developed by Moximed, the Calypso Knee System is designed to treat osteoarthritis in the inner knee by providing support outside of the knee joint. The implant does not alter the patient's anatomy or remove any tissue.

2. "[The implant] works like a shock absorber to take pressure off the inside of the knee while creating a cushion similar to what cartilage provides in a healthy joint," said David Flanigan, MD, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery.

3. The surgery was part of a clinical trial to determine whether the Calypso Knee System can help prevent or delay knee replacements for osteoarthritis patients by extending the life of the joint.
