Audubon, Pa.-based Globus Medical acquired the company that markets and develops Surgimap, a surgical planning software platform.

Here are five things to know:

1. The acquisition bolsters Globus' efforts to advance computer-assisted surgery. The company is already in the surgical navigation/robotics space with the ExcelsiusGPS, a robotic system aimed at improving the precision of screw placement during spinal procedures.

"We are very excited about the strategic fit of this acquisition, which will allow us to further enhance the capability of our ExcelsiusGPS navigation and robotic system to assist surgeons in planning complex spine procedures and placing screws more accurately and less invasively," said CEO Dave Demski.

2. Surgimap's platform provides surgical simulation to examine potential outcomes. Surgeons can also share medical images through the platform to improve workflow and patient care. The technology is currently licensed to most leading spine implant manufacturers to enable surgical planning and simulation for complex deformity procedures.

3. After bringing the Surgimap team on board, Globus expects to accelerate the launch of new imaging, navigation and robotics products.

4. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

5. During the second quarter of 2018, Globus reported a 13.8 percent increase in worldwide sales to $173.4 million. The growth was driven by it's emerging technologies line, specifically sales of the ExcelsiusGPS robotic system.
