Orthofix re-aligns around spine, extremities after acquiring Spinal Kinetics: 4 key points

Spinal Tech

Orthofix realigned strategic business units to focus on spine and extremities and named Brad Niemann president of Global Orthofix Spine.

"In 2013, Orthofix segmented its business into four strategic business units to gain better strategic and management focus and drive needed performance improvements," said Orthofix President and CEO Brad Mason. "This strategy has proved very successful over the last several years and resulted in each business performing well with solid leadership, execution and growth."

Here are four things to know:

1. Orthofix strategically re-aligned to accelerate growth around the spine and extremities business. The company plans to expand offerings and integrate new technologies in spine, including the M6 disc acquired from Spinal Kinetics earlier this year.

2. The company will consolidate the spine group and also focus on the extremities business, which is led by Davide Bianchi. "This structure will foster better collaboration and alignment by bringing these teams together under one umbrella to help ensure we make the most of our opportunity in the market," said Mr. Niemann.

3. In his new role, Mr. Niemann will oversee Orthofix's BioStim, spine fixation, Spinal Kinetics and biologics businesses. He joined Orthofix in 2012 as senior vice president of commercial operations and was promoted to president of the BioStim strategic business unit a year later. While there, he led efforts to expand the bone growth stimulation technology utilization.

4. Moving forward, Orthofix will report financial performance according to the four strategic business unit structures until the beginning of 2019, when the company expects the transition to be complete.
