Study: Aesculap reports new analysis comparing lumbar degenerative disc disease treatment options

Spinal Tech

A new network meta-analysis published in Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research compared various treatment methods for single-level lumbar degenerative disc disease, according to Future Medicine.

Here are four things to know:

1. Specifically, the study compared various lumbar DDD devices against fusion and conservative care. Devices included Aesculap's activL Artificial Disc, DePuy Synthes' first-generation ProDisc-L and Charité, Medtronic's Maverick, SpinalMotion's Kineflex-L and Stryker's Flexicore.

2. The study gathered outcomes form six randomized controlled trials.

3. Jack Zigler, MD, of Dallas-based Texas Back Institute's Center for Disc Replacement, led the study.

4. Researchers found the activL Artificial Disc was most effective in positively impacting patient disability, pain and satisfaction, compared to the ProDisc-L, fusion or conservative care.

"[A] broader view afforded by an NMA asserts that properly selected patients do better with activL than fusion or conservative care or even first-generation lumbar discs," concluded Dr. Zigler.
