Atlanta's Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center will utilize ConforMIS technologies to design patients' custom knees in Johns Creek, Ga., according to the Johns Creek Patch.

1. Burlington, Mass.-based ConforMIS made the technology, which will offer patients quicker recovery, less blood loss, easier range of motion and better long-term wear for patients.

2. Mathew Pombo, MD, an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon, says: "After performing a CT scan, we use an automated design that maps the size and shape of the joint in 3D…The software allows us to precisely match implants and instrumentation to the model of the knee."

3. 3D printers use the software's measurements to print the design of the knee implant.

4. The outpatient procedure reduces patients' hospital stays to less than 24 hours.

5. Dr. Pombo says that he has performed around 500 customized 3D knee replacements at his practice, which many elite athletes receive during and after their careers.
