The first and sole hospital in the state, Bristol (Conn.) Hospital is now providing patients the Plymouth, Minn.-based Rotation Medical's Rotator Cuff Bioinductive Implant for treating rotator cuff injuries, according to The Bristol Press.
Here are five highlights:
1. The system includes a patch implant which dissolves over time, allowing for new tissue to grow in its place.
2. Patients who undergo the Rotation Medical Rotator Cuff system treatment wear an arm sling for about one week to two weeks, and return to normal activities in about three months.
3. Christopher Betz, DO, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician, performs procedures with the system at Bristol Hospital's Center for Orthopedic and Spine Health.
4. Dr. Betz earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa., and completed his residency at Hofstra North-Shore LIJ Health Systems in Hempstead, N.Y. He underwent a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
5. More than four million people suffer from rotator cuff injuries each year in the United States.
