A study found the use of AQUACEL Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing resulted in a substantial reduction in wound complications and dressing changes, and enhanced patient satisfaction in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty, as opposed to the use of a standard gauze surgical dressing.

In the trial, 262 patients were randomized to get either AQUACEL Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing or a standard gauze surgical dressing after knee or hip replacement surgery.

American Journal of Orthopedics published the results.

Here are five key points:

1. The study's findings showed a significant reduction in wound complications (10 percent versus 22 percent) and blisters (0.7 percent and 6 percent).

2. Researchers found reductions in the number of dressing changes (0.14 changes versus 2.8 changes).

3. The patients reported higher levels of satisfaction with their ability to take care of their personal hygiene, to change clothes and to sit and sleep comfortably when using AQUACEL Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing.

4. Researchers conducted the study at the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center in Charlotte, N.C.

5. AQUACEL Ag SURGICAL Cover Dressing is an antimicrobial cover dressing that provides patients a proprietary Hydrofiber Technology wound contact layer.
