Dr. Warren Yu implants Interventional Spine's Opticage in first US patient: 5 things to know

Warren Yu, MD, implanted Irvine, Calif.-based Interventional Spine’s 3rd Generation Opticage Expandable Interbody Fusion device in the first patient in the United States.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Yu is the director of spine surgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He praised the implant for its "ease of use, streamlined profile and new ergonomic delivery mechanism."

 

2. Designed for lumbar fusions, the new Opticage system offers the ability to deliver graft material through the implant following expansion.

 

3. Interventional Spine holds various issued and pending patents on the Opticage design and methods of use.

 

4. Surgeons around the globe have implanted the previous generation Opticage, released in 2012, nearly 2,000 times.

 

5. The company plans to launch a portfolio of the new system in January 2016.
