Memorial Medical Center gets new surgical system — 5 key points

Spinal Tech

A new robot-assisted surgical system has been introduced at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, Wis., according to the Ashland Daily Press.

Here are five key points:

1. It's known as the da Vinci Xi system and was created by Intuitive Surgical.

2. The system allows surgeons to make a few small incisions to perform a large variety of surgeries.

3. Its features include a magnified 3-D high definition system and tiny, wrist-like instruments that bend and rotate to a far greater degree than is possible for the human hand. Not only does the feature make operations more precise and offers the surgeon greater control, but it also means less pain for the patient, better surgical outcomes and a faster recovery time.

4. The da Vinci Xi can be used in cardiac, colorectal, gynecological, head, thoracic, urologic and general surgeries. MMC will mainly use it for gynecologic, urologic and general surgery, according to MMC CEO Jason Douglas.

5. The procedure involves the surgeon sitting at a console and controlling the operation through a 3-D screen while laparoscopic instruments perform the surgery via exquisitely crafted instruments.
