A new study found acromioclavicular joint dislocation can be treated without surgery, according to NYC Today.
Researchers analyzed 83 patients with dislocated AC joints, treating 40 patients with surgery and 43 patients without surgery.
Here are five observations:
1. Researchers found a speedy recovery in patients with AC joint dislocations who wore a sling and underwent rehabilitation.
2. Researchers claimed the medical field cannot clearly explain the long-term implications of AC joint dislocation surgery compared to non-operative treatment.
3. However, surgery may prove to be beneficial as the joints are placed correctly and the shoulder looks more symmetrical after surgery.
4. The findings revealed 75 percent of the nonsurgical patients returned to work after three months compared to only 43 percent of surgical patients.
5. Nonsurgical patients had greater mobility than their surgical counterparts at follow-up sessions six weeks and three months after their injuries.
