Operation Walk, a nonprofit organization, will once again travel to Cuba to serve patients in need of total hip and knee replacement surgeries, according to The Tampa Tribune.
Here are five things to know:
1. Kenneth Gustke, MD, a founding member of the Florida Orthopedic Institute, will lead Operation Walk.
2. Dr. Gustke and a team of 70 U.S. medical professionals will serve Cuban residents from Nov. 11 to Nov. 18. They aim to perform up to 50 surgeries for free.
3. Operation Walk will administer care at CIMEQ Hospital in Havana. The hospital will provide larger equipment including anesthesia machines and surgery tables.
4. President Obama authorized Operation Walk to travel to Cuba as along as the trip fit under one of 12 categories that include medical and health-related projects.
5. Operation Walk has undergone 150 missions to 14 nations including Mexico, Vietnam, Tanzania, Guatemala, Peru, Nicaragua and El Salvador. The group has performed procedures for more than 7,500 patients.
