The University of Delaware Research Foundation will give several Strategic Initiative Grants, each worth $45,000, to young researchers with faculty mentors for medical issues, one of which is focused on orthopedic disorders, according to a UDaily report.
One of the projects is focused on helping patients with genetic disorders that weaken bones and make it more difficult to recover after bone fractures and surgery. The researchers will test a new material to mimic the body's natural collagen that would ultimately correct the genetic defects.
Pediatric geneticist Dr. Michael Bober and pediatric orthopedic surgeon Richard Kruse, MD, are working on the project with April Kloxin. Both Dr. Bober and Dr. Kruse are looking for a way to promote bone regeneration among children with osteogenesis imperfecta.
