Dr. John Peloza performs 1st U.S. surgery using FLXfit 3D expandable interbody cage

John Peloza, MD, of Plano-based Texas Back Institute, performed the first surgery in the United Stated with the FLXfit, the only 3D expandable interbody cage in the world.

Dr. Peloza, a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon, focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery. "This surgery is a dramatic evolution of minimally invasive, spinal fusion procedure. Most of the implants used from the posterior approach have significant limitations; they can't cover enough of the disc space for good vertebral support and they lack an expansion mechanism enabling lordosis angle correction," he said. "The FLXfit, thanks to its articulated design, can be steered to the right position where we want it, covering a large area. In addition, it expands in the front of the disc space and restores the natural lordosis angle."

Expanding Orthopedics, a privately held medical device company, designed and developed the FLXfit.
