Yale student scoliosis brace tracking device startup gets $100k

Spinal Tech

A group of Yale students who developed a startup company for a feedback device attached to scoliosis braces just hit the big time, according to a Yale Entrepreneurial Institute report.

The device attaches to scoliosis braces and provides real-time feedback on wear time and tightness. The YEI Innovation Fund awarded the students $100,000 to support product development as well as web and iPhone app development to gather and make sense of the data from these devices.

The startup is called 109 Design, and one of the founders suffered from scoliosis as a child. He wanted to address issues with scoliosis treatment, and found many problems stem from children not wearing braces as prescribed, leading to spine surgery.

The team is now working with Yale-New Haven Hospital physicians to collect data using the device. They hope to conduct a clinical trial. In the meantime, the team is developing the program to help incentivize children to wear their braces as directed.
