As the new president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, John J. Callaghan, MD, has his work cut out for him. Under his leadership in 2010, the AAOS plans to enhance all aspects of patient care, initiate new working relationships with other orthopedic organizations and track success rates for procedures and devices to help improve standard of care. The AAOS will also work on developing the American Joint Replacement Registry, a voluntary hip and knee replacement registry with the potential for 750,000 entries in the first year.

Dr. Callaghan graduated from Notre Dame University and Loyola Medical School and completed his residency in orthopedics at the University of Iowa. He also completed a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Before becoming president of the AAOS, he served as first vice president of the Academy and vice president of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as chairman of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.

Dr. Callaghan specializes in adult reconstruction, specifically hip and knee replacements. He is on the orthopedic staff at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and teaches at the Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Iowa. He has also been honored with five Hip Society Awards, two Knee Society Awards and the Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation Clinical Research Award.

After the January earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Callaghan placed great importance on delivering healthcare to victims of the disaster. He stated in March that the Haiti mission was "front and center" for the AAOS.

"We are incredibly proud of our colleagues who were willing to help people in need," Dr. Callaghan said in a March statement to AAOS Now. "That is our profession at its best."
