Columbia University Medical Center performs 1st surgery using Titan Medical's Sport Surgical System: 5 insights

MIS

Titan Medical reported the first use of its Sport Surgical System at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, according to NB Herard.

Here are five insights:

1. The Sport Surgical System is a single-port robotic surgical system comprised of a surgeon-controlled patient cart, which includes a 3-D vision system, multi-articulating instruments and a surgeon workstation.

2. Arnold Advincula, MD, and William Burke, MD, performed the successful surgery. The surgery system allowed the physicians to complete tissue grasping, dissection, suturing, cutting and coagulation through a single incision.

3. Columbia University plans to use the Sport Surgical System during a variety of abdominal procedures, as well as for colorectal, urologic and general surgeries.

4. Dr. Burke expressed the ease of transition from a multi-port approach to a single-port robotic surgery. The multi-articulated instruments and 3-D visualization gave both physicians more ease while performing surgery.

5. Titan Medical's minimally invasive surgery system is also installed at Florida Hospital Nicholson Center. The hospital has reported recent successes in a variety of surgeries using the Sport Surgical System.
