Neurosurgeon Kevin Vaught, MD, of Regional Brain and Spine in Cape Girardeau, Mo., became the first neurosurgeon in the U.S. to perform a SI joint fusion using the Mazor X system, according to KFVS 12.

Here are five highlights:

1. Regional Brain and Spine acquired the system in early August, making it the first hospital in Missouri to integrate the Mazor X platform.

2. By using the Mazor X patients experience less pain and blood loss, smaller incisions, shorter hospitalization and a faster recovery time.

3. Mazor X also eliminates a patient's exposure to radiation during surgery.

4. Dr. Vaught is a board certified neurosurgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

5. Previously, Dr. Vaught served as chief of staff at the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
