Here are 25 knee surgeons to know.

James Andrews, MD (Andrews Sports Medicine, Birmingham, Ala.). Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Ala., and the founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute, a non-profit institute dedicated to injury prevention, education and research in orthopedics and sports medicine. He has made significant contributions to knee, shoulder and elbow injury prevention and treatment.


Dr. Andrews received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his orthopedic residency at Tulane Medical School. He completed surgical fellowships at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Va., and at the University of Lyon (France.) He is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is president-elect of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and served on the board of directors of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Knee Society.

Brian J. Cole, MD, MBA (Midwest Orthopedics at Rush, Chicago).
Dr. Cole is a professor in the department of orthopedics with a conjoint appointment in the department of anatomy and cell biology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is the section head of the cartilage research program at Rush University Medical Center and the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush, a multidisciplinary program specializing in the restoration of articular cartilage and meniscal deficiency. He also serves as the head of the orthopedic master's program and trains residents and fellows in sports medicine. Dr. Cole is the team physician for the Chicago Bulls basketball team and co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox baseball team and DePaul University in Chicago.

Dr. Cole specializes in arthroscopic shoulder, elbow and knee surgery with a specific interest in arthroscopic reconstruction of the athlete's shoulder, elbow and knee. He is the principal investigator for numerous FDA clinical trials and regularly performs basic science research. Jack Farr, MD (Cartilage Restoration Center of Indiana, Indianapolis). Dr. Farr is the medical director for the Cartilage Restoration Center of Indiana. Over the past 20 years, following completion of his orthopedic surgery residency at Indiana University Medical Center, Dr. Farr has focused his practice in sports medicine and knee restoration. His numerous appointments and affiliations include a clinical associate professorship in orthopedic surgery at Indiana University Medical Center and a board position with the Cartilage Research Foundation.

David Fisher, MD (OrthoIndy, Indianapolis, Ind.). Dr. Fu has been the head team physician for the University of Pittsburgh department of athletics since 1986 and holds secondary appointments at the university as professor of physical therapy and health physical and recreational education. John Gill, MD (Dallas Sports Medicine Specialists, Dallas). Dr. Gill is an orthopedic surgeon with Dallas Sports Medicine Specialists and the Texas Institute for Surgery. E. Marlowe Goble, MD (Salt River Orthopedics, Afton, Wyo.). He performed one of thee first minimally-invasive knee replacement procedures and holds more than 70 patents. He currently practices at Salt River Orthopedics in Afton, Wyo., serves as the director of the Utah State University medical device testing laboratory in the department of animal science and is an adjunct professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Utah. Christopher Harner (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh). Frank R. Noyes, MD (Cincinnati Sportsmedicine and Orthopaedic Center, Cincinnati, Ohio).
Dr. Noyes is founder of the Cincinnati (Ohio) Sportsmedicine and Orthopaedic Center and director of The Noyes Knee Center. He is an internationally recognized authority on the diagnosis and treatment of complex knee problems. In 1975, he joined the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati and started Cincinnati's first sports medicine program. He also established the Noyes-Giannestras Biomechanics Laboratories within the University of Cincinnati College of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, and today serves as a clinical professor with the school's department of orthopedic surgery and an adjunct professor with the department of biomedical engineering. Dr. Noyes received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed an internship and orthopedic residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michael B. Purnell, MD (Orthomed Center, Modesto, Calif.). Dr. Purnell is an orthopedic surgeon at Orthomed Center in Modesto, Calif.
