Olympus launches 4K-3D video microscope: 5 takeaways

Imaging

Olympus launched its 4K-3D video microscope Orbeye, which can be used during spine and neurosurgical procedures. The microscope was developed by Sony Olympus Medical Solutions, a joint venture between Olympus and Sony Imaging Products and Solutions.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Orbeye is designed to give surgeons more accuracy by providing high resolution 3D imaging of the structure of tissue and blood vessels among other features.

2. The surgical procedure is displayed on a 55-inch monitor to reduce surgeon fatigue by eliminating the need for extensive viewing via microscope eyepieces and to include the entire surgical time in the view of the procedure.

3. The use of digital technology makes the microscope unit approximately 95 percent smaller in volume, helping free up surgical space and shorten setup times.

4. Additionally, Orbeye is made 50 percent lighter than its previous model to facilitate its transportation between operating rooms.

5. Sony Olympus Medical Solutions develops, manufactures and sells endoscopy products for surgical use.
