Dr. Amit Momaya on the next thing to disrupt orthopedics

Featured Insights

Amit Momaya, MD, is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon and is the head of the sports medicine division at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's department of orthopedic surgery. He recently shared with Becker's his thoughts on important current and future trends in orthopedics and healthcare.

Question: What are you most proud of from the last year?

Dr. Amit Momaya: The biggest thing I am proud of this past year is the start of the first randomized controlled trial comparing all soft tissue quad tendon to bone patella tendon anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) autograft. We are conducting this here at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The study will shed light on graft choice, stability and outcomes.

Q: What are the biggest trends you're following in healthcare right now?

AM: The biggest trends we are following currently involve the use of biologics to enhance our surgeries and augment the healing process. Many of them use bovine collagen.

Q: What are you excited about for 2024?

AM: I am most excited in 2024 to initiate a new randomized controlled trial looking at if we can augment an allograft ACL to supplant the use of autograft ACL by augmentation, both mechanical and biological. This would be a game changer and disrupt the industry.
