Stem cell treatment targets, eradicates bone cancer metastases in mice — 4 insights

A team of UC Irvine researchers developed a mesenchymal stem cell-based treatment that can identify and kill bone cancer metastases in mice, the Daily Pilot reports.

What you should know:

1. Researchers injected mice with bone marrow-derived stem cells modified to target metastatic sites. The stem cell then delivers therapeutics to the site that target the bone cancer.

2. The treatment is safe and almost nontoxic when compared to chemotherapy.

3. If the treatment translates to humans, it could improve the quality of life during and post-treatment.

4. Researchers believe the treatment could also be used to treat multiple myeloma and osteoporosis.
