Sealantis, the Haifa, Israel-based developer of absorbable surgical sealants and adhesives, received CE marking approval for its Seal-G Surgical Sealant. The CE marking will allow the product to be marketed in Europe and other countries.
Here is what you should know:
1. It is the only alginate sealant designed specifically to reduce leaks after GI surgery.
2. Sealantis uses a protein-free plant-based technology which provides strong adhesion in a wet surgical field. Seal-G is the company's flagship product and is engineered to reinforce the staple-line or suture in GI surgery.
3. Seal-G prevents anastomotic leaks, a complication that occurs in 5 percent to 15 percent of GI surgical patients, by reinforcing the anastomosis in the initial postsurgery period when leaks are most likely to occur.
4. Anastomotic leaks cause one-third of postsurgical deaths after colorectal surgery, and this devastating complication can increase patient management costs fivefold.
5. Seal-G is not approved by the FDA and is not yet available for sale in the United States.
