Human stem cells help rats with SCI regain movement — 4 notes

Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology and Tel Aviv University researchers studied the impact of human stem cells on a rat’s spinal cord injuries, Business Insider reports.

Here are four notes:

 

1. Surgeons transplanted the stem cells, taken from an adult human’s mouth, into rats’ SCI sites. The stem cells were transplanted on a biodegradable scaffold.

 

2. Following the procedure, the rats began to walk within two to three weeks.

 

3. Forty percent of the rats recovered movement and sensory perception.

 

4. The study authors noted their study is in the early stages.
