California surgeon treats NBA player’s fracture with biologic injection

New Orleans Pelicans player Zion Williamson has received a biologic injection to promote bone healing in a fracture in his right foot, according to the NBA.

Three notes:

1. Richard Ferkel, MD, a surgeon with Southern California Orthopedic Institute, administered the biologic on Dec. 15.

2. Dr. Ferkel is assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at UCLA and director of the sports medicine fellowship program at Southern California Orthopedic Institute, according to his website.

3. The Pelicans will provide more updates when further imaging is performed in four to six weeks.
