Biologic treatment shows promise for spinal degeneration

An observational study published in Biomedicines evaluated 117 patients who received one to three applications of cryopreserved human umbilical cord tissue allografts for thoracic and lumbar paraspinal muscle and entheses defects.

The study, which included patients across 11 clinics with imaging-confirmed paraspinal degeneration, found reductions in Numeric Pain Rating Scale and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores across all treatment groups, according to a July 23 news release. Patients who received multiple applications showed statistically significant improvements in several analyses, and the authors reported no adverse events or complications.

The study used data from an observational repository overseen by Regenerative Labs, the biotechnology company that markets the allografts evaluated. The findings support further evaluation of human umbilical cord tissue allografts for paraspinal degeneration.
